Hey there, jewelry designers, the deadline for the prestigious 2014 Saul Bell Design Award competition is approaching but there’s still time to enter!
Started in honor of Saul Bell, Rio Grande’s founder, this international competition recognizes distinction in jewelry design. It invites you to challenge yourself as a designer, and in the spirit of innovation, to create without boundaries. Go ahead. Show the jewelry world what you’ve got! Push yourself to new limits. Innovate. Entertain and surprise us all!
This year’s competition includes some exciting changes. The biggest is the introduction of a new alternative metals/materials category. Designers have been clamoring for this category for a while and we believe the trend toward alternative metals and materials in the jewelry industry is here to stay.
The predominant material in this category can be any non-traditional metal or material not covered in another category. This might include base metals and reactive metals, resin, glass, wood, found objects, and textiles. There is a huge range of creative possibility in this category and we look forward to your innovative and boundary-pushing entries!
Here’s a complete list of the competition’s seven categories:
- Silver/Argentium® Silver
- Metal Clay
- Alternative Metals/Materials
- Hollowware/Art Object.
You can find complete category details at the Saul Bell Design Award website.
I’ve compiled a few finalists from the past. Let them inspire you to take a chance this year and enter!
And for you emerging artists—which includes any designer 18 years of age or younger as of August 1, 2013—here’s a little inspiration:
So what are you waiting for? Renderings, photographs, or electronic files must be received by Rio Grande by SEPTEMBER 27, 2013 for the main competition and by NOVEMBER 29, 2013 for the Emerging Jewelry Artist category. You can find detailed information and guidelines for entry at saulbellaward.com.
