Have you ever been disappointed to find that the end product of your jewelry design did not quite live up to what you had envisioned? Consider this: The more techniques you have at your disposal, the more satisfied you’ll be with your results. Don’t let a lack of knowledge hold you back.
Here in Albuquerque, Rio Grande offers classes that can take your jewelry making to the next level. Three classes will be offered this May. And as of today, there are openings. Read on, then register before these classes fill up!
On May 1, take Beginning PMC with Rio Grande’s longtime PMC expert, award-winning jewelry artist and author of Bronze Metal Clay, Yvonne M. Padilla. In Beginning PMC, Yvonne will lead you through using molds, texturing your PMC, forming custom bails, and preparing for firing. She will walk you through the firing process and post-fire finishing techniques. She’ll even teach you how to correct mistakes! This class is appropriate for jewelry makers who have never worked with PMC as well as those who would like to refresh and solidify their PMC skills. Read more about Beginning PMC and register on our website. And get to know Yvonne by reading her Rio Superstar Spotlight, from last November, here on The Studio.
Stay a few more days and take PMC Certification on May 2-4 with Barbara Becker Simon. Barbara’s an award-winning jewelry artist, author, and PMC virtuoso. Visit her on Pinterest and be amazed by her talent with PMC and other materials. She’s also on the cover of the April/May/June issue of Metal Clay Artist magazine!
In PMC Certification, Barbara will test your proficiency in PMC and teach you about stamping, carving, simple tool-making, gem-setting, building a hollow form, embellishing beads, patterning, texturing, mold-making, slip-making, ring-sizing, rehydrating PMC, and creating surface finishes. Students who gain certification leave this class equipped with advanced skills and knowledge. This class will prepare you to teach PMC classes and to incorporate PMC into your own work, not to mention you’ll enjoy the benefit of discounts on more than 1,000 products as a member of the Rio Rewards program. Read more about PMC Certification and register on our website.
On May 15 and 16, Intermediate Stone-Setting will take your skills to the next level. Students review the basic stone-setting process and refine their skills to move on to more advanced techniques including channel setting, pavé setting, Gypsy (flush mounting), as well as bead- and bright-cutting (a wonderful technique for setting diamonds). If you have not taken a beginning stone-setting class but wish to take this one, we highly recommend that you have good Flex Shaft skills, including being very comfortable with drilling holes and using burs.
