Few things say luxury and style like classic yellow gold and say it in a language that is so universally understood.
“It is the only material in the world that inspires a collective enthusiastic response no matter your nationality, political affiliation, sexual preference, or financial status,” says Jennifer Heebner, senior editor at JCK’s Style 360 blog, in a recent May is Gold Month interview. “Gold speaks to everyone in a language that transcends barriers…”
Luckily for jewelers, the timeless metal is also riding a surging trend in 2014.
Its recent popularity may have something to do with how quickly the gold market dropped over the last year, which gave designers and consumers more latitude to invest in bigger, bolder pieces at a more attainable price point. And with its warm tones and sunny hue, yellow gold is a cheerful choice for the year ahead.
Jennifer put yellow gold at number five on her list of the top 12 trends for 2014, and national promotional campaigns such as May is Gold Month have kept it front and center in the minds of consumers.
“May is Gold Month,” which is sponsored by major retailers such as HSN and Kay Jewelers and is now in its 14th year, is hosting giveaways, Instagram contests and trends interviews with industry experts to raise the profile of gold right at the start of wedding, anniversary, graduation, and shower season.
So what should you be designing and stocking to prepare for customers who are craving a gold fix?
Dawn Nials, Rio Grande’s findings product manager, has a couple of suggestions.
“Message jewelry is big right now,” she says. “Everything from custom-stamped findings to ‘statement’ pieces hanging at choker length, featuring a large, cast message. Also trending are bangles with messaging along their length.”
Jennifer suggests gold geometric pieces will also do well this season.
“Styles will be lean, have negative space—in cage or bar effects—and geometric motifs, some finished in black rhodium,” she says. “Pieces are channeling a polished grunge era, but without that moody mojo of the early nineties.”
There’s no denying that gold is good this season. So good that our “What Are You Working on Now?” contest is yellow-gold themed this month!
