While Rio associates don't qualify to enter The Saul Bell Design Award Competition, there are plenty of other competitions they can enter. One of them is "All That Glitters," the jewelry design competition hosted by the New Mexico Jewelers Association. This year's "All That Glitters" contest brought a level of competition that was extremely high, with astounding designs across nine categories from talented jewelers around the state.

The competition culminated in an awards gala at The New Mexico Museum of Natural History last Saturday, September 29th. Judges, including Kate Wolf and Charles Lewton-Brain, had quite a job deciding on the winners. Little did we know that a host of our own associates would rock the competition, bringing home five awards including the top prize!

Yvonne Padilla, metal clay artist extraordinaire, won first place in each of the two Metal Clay categories.

Sessin Durgham, from our Tech Team, won 1st place in the Silver category with this beautiful bracelet:

Also from our Tech Team, Gregg Burgard came home with a 1st prize and the Premier Award for his Pate de Verre octopus:

Jamie Vela of Mark Diamond's Jewelers won the People’s Choice Award for her incredible piece titled "Swinging Pink":

Jamie’s pendant holds a 7.69ct emerald-cut Sherry Zircon framed in 14KT Rose Gold and a band of white and chocolate diamonds.

In the main Gold and Platinum category, Ron Beauchamp wowed the judges with his "Blue Corn Petroglyph":

If you happen to be in Albuquerque, all the pieces will be on display at the Natural History Museum through November 13th, 2012. All in all, it was quite the evening (especially for our associates!).

Have you entered any jewelry competitions lately? Are you tempted to give it a try? If you have, we would love to hear what you've done to help your piece get noticed by the judges!

This year’s Santa Fe Indian Market was another smashing success. For those of you who don’t live in the great state of New Mexico, Indian Market is a 90-year-old tradition celebrating Native American arts and culture. This year, two of Rio Grande’s own were asked to be judges in the jewelry division. Eddie Bell, one of Rio’s directors, was a judge in the Contemporary Jewelry category, and Sessin Durgham, tech expert and craftsman extraordinaire, was a judge in the Pre-Columbian/Beading category.
